Maryland routs Princeton in NCAA men’s lacrosse opener, and Duke is next

The seventh-seeded Maryland men’s lacrosse team had been a mess offensively entering its NCAA tournament opener against Princeton on Saturday night. But the Terrapins emerged refreshed and energized on that end of the field during a 16-8 first-round triumph at SECU Stadium.

Junior Eric Spanos scored a game-high four goals and two others collected hat tricks for Maryland (9-5), which scored its most goals of the season as it advanced to next Saturday’s quarterfinal against No. 2 seed Duke in Hempstead, N.Y. Duke rolled past Utah, 19-7, earlier in the day in Durham, N.C.
